Ministry of Commerce has certified 2 more products for geographical indication
The Ministry of Commerce has certified 2 more products for geographical indication (GI), comprising Mohom Phrae clothes and Hom Thong Pha Thum bananas, with the aim of creating added value for local products and increasing income for the communities. Mohom Phrae clothes are local woven fabric in Phrae province made of natural fibres or synthetic fibres that have been through natural dyeing processes. To create patterns, the fabric is tie-dyed, dipped, or printed with colour extracted from Hom or Strobilanthes cusia, a plant grown in the province. In addition to blue to dark blue shades from the plant, the fabric has its own natural pleasant smell. Next, the Hom Thong Pha Thum banana, originating from and cultivated in Pathum Thani province, is one of the banana varieties that yield long, large fruits with a thin skin. A ripe fruit has a golden colour, thick texture, and sweet taste. With these products, Thailand now has 120 products from 76 provinces that are certified as GI products. All products’ names have been protected as a specific right of their origin and kept to maintain their standard and local wisdom, as well as guarantee their origin and quality.
