“Nan Model” SEP for SDGs

In 2009, the Pid Thong Lang Phra Foundation chose Nan province of Thailand as a pilot model to apply the sufficiency economy philosophy (SEP) of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great as a guiding principle in resolving socio-economic problems as well as strengthening sustainable development. The project was a collaboration between the public and private sectors and was aimed at alleviating poverty in 3 initial districts. After 10 years of adaptation of the SEP, the project has become living proof of the 3-step development theory; namely, self-sufficiency within the household, collective community efforts to enhance efficiency in the development of local products, marketing management and cost reduction, and supporting linkages with external partners. The average income per household in Nan, as a result, has increased significantly, as household debt continues to decrease. With improved agricultural productivity, Nan has truly become a role model for other provinces.
