The sixth edition of the Awakening Festivals will be held in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Awakening Chiang Mai is set to light up the city from November 10th to 19th, 2023 and Awakening Bangkok from November 24th to December 3rd, 2023.
Both Awakening Festivals will feature the work of local talents. Professional artists, college students, and amateur enthusiasts alike are welcome to submit projects to be featured at the festivals.
Awakening Chiang Mai
The Awakening Chiang Mai Festival 2023 has expanded beyond the capital under the theme of “Polar-Rise.” The concept symbolizes Chiang Mai’s growth as a creative hub in the North of Thailand, as well as its efforts to combat climate change and the threat of pollution.
The festival will be set along the streets and alleyways that snake through the old trading area between the city walls and Ping River, also known as Chang Moi and Tha Pae.
For those planning to visit Awakening Chiang Mai, organizers are promising 17 lighting installations, four hangout spots, and three music showcases.
Awakening Bangkok is Bangkok’s largest light and digital arts festival that gathers local artists to exhibit projects. This year’s festival will be held under the concept of “Time Passage,” representing the significance of the intertwined historic streets, while also highlighting how the old quarter was bridged with the new, sprawling metropolis.
Like past editions of Awakening Bangkok, the installations and sculptures will take up space in long-forgotten structures, historic buildings, and dead-end alleys, nudging these areas awake and bringing them back to the light.
For the first time, Awakening Bangkok will be showing in venues outside of Charoenkrung. This year’s locations include key landmarks in areas around Phra Nakhon and Pak Klong Talad, such as the Flower Market, Yodpiman Riverwalk, Bamrung Mueng and Feueng Nakhon Roads, and the Giant Swing.
