Bangkok takes top spot in Time Out’s 2026 best cities after dark

Bangkok has been named the world’s best nightlife city for 2026 by Time Out, leapfrogging from 13th place last year. Berlin, New York City, Melbourne, and São Paulo rounded out the top five, while Las Vegas, which held the No. 1 position in 2025, didn’t even make this year’s top 10.

The recognition is yet another notable boost for a city that’s spent years building a tourism reputation around far more than temples, shopping malls, and street food, with Bangkok’s appeal after dark increasingly becoming a destination all its own.

Nights that don’t end “at the clerb”

What makes the ranking especially noteworthy is that Time Out’s assessment was based more on the variety of things to do and less on just the number of clubs a city can pack into a neighborhood.

“From over-30s parties to speakeasies and listening bars, every city offers unforgettable experiences for every kind of night out and every kind of person,” said Grace Beard, Travel Editor at Time Out. “That’s exactly what great city life should look like.”

This is vividly observable in Bangkok, where rooftop bars offer sweeping views of the skyline while smaller cocktail bars and retrofitted shophouses can provide a more intimate ambience. Thonglor and Silom both remain major nightlife hubs, while the Yaowarat Chinatown has developed its own distinctive scene.

Food was another factor, one all but impossible to separate from the nightlife of a city that doesn’t require visitors to decide what sort of night they want before going out. A night owl might begin with a panoramic view from a rooftop, move to a neighborhood bar in Soi Nana, and end the evening over street food in the early hours, for example.

This is a city where options can change from one street to the next.

The ranking also carries particular weight because it wasn’t based primarily on tourists dipping their toes or passing through the capital on their way to somewhere else.

Time Out polled over 24,000 residents across 150 cities, then combined their responses with assessments from more than 100 local editors and nightlife experts. Questions covered everything from affordability and atmosphere to safety, diversity, and the overall sense of community after the sun goes down.

Among Bangkok residents, 73% rated the city’s nightlife as good or excellent, while an expert panel gave the Thai capital a score of 95%.

That combination points to a nighttime economy deeply embedded in the city’s broader urban fabric, from its entertainment venues to its community spaces, rather than something manufactured primarily for the benefit of tourists.

Time Out’s recognition also fits into a broader pattern, as Bangkok has performed strongly in international rankings covering areas like tourism and repeat visitation, including Agoda’s top spot for Asia’s most revisited city in 2025.

Bangkok has always been a city that rewards staying out a little later than usual and now one of the world’s most prominent city-ranking publications has made that part of its official tourism pitch.

Nevertheless, what’s perhaps even more inspiring than simply being named the world’s best party city is how residents of the capital are consistently able to find one reason after another to stay up past their bedtime, often until morning.
