Description Northern Thailand is bound by national borders with Myanmar to the west and Lao PDR to the east. Known for its mountainous terrain and cooler climate, the northern region’s many tributary rivers feed into the Chao Phraya River. Prominent cities include the commercial hub of Chiang Mai, also recognized as a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art, and the historical city of Sukhothai, the capital of the first Siamese kingdom. North Thailand has a distinct cultural heritage of Lanna traditions, craftsmanship, and agriculture, producing rice, maize, soybeans, and coffee beans. Visitors tend to be drawn to the region for its stunning temples like Wat Rong Khun and unique festivals like Yi Peng, but stay for the small-town culture.
