2025 is an auspicious year for Thailand’s diplomatic relations, marking milestone anniversaries with several key regional partners. From cultural exchanges to high-profile agreements, Thailand is marking these occasions while strengthening its ties with Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, and Singapore through a series of celebratory events and collaborative initiatives.
Thailand and Cambodia: 75 Years of Bilateral Ties
Thailand and Cambodia are celebrating 75 years of bilateral relations with a range of activities, including merit-making at temples and the Two Kingdoms Run that was held on March 16th, which saw runners starting in Thailand, crossing into Cambodia, and finishing on the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge. A new commemorative logo will also be featured on public promotions in both countries, symbolizing their enduring partnership.
In a historic move for cultural cooperation, Thailand has also resolved to return 20 Cambodian artifacts, while a new educational Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) will support Cambodian vocational students studying in Thailand. Additionally, media exchanges continue to flourish, with Thai journalists scheduled to visit Cambodia this year. The anniversary will include a special football match in Phnom Penh in March 2025.
Thailand and Indonesia: A Creative 75th Anniversary
The 75th anniversary of Thailand-Indonesia relations is being celebrated with a creative touch. A logo design contest invited citizens from both countries to contribute to the commemorative efforts. The winning design, announced in December 2024, will be featured in official celebrations, with prizes including a round-trip flight between Bangkok and Jakarta.
Historical ties between the Thai and Indonesian people in fact date back to ancient times and kingdoms, with the visits of King Chulalongkorn the Great (King Rama V) to Java in the late 19th century and reciprocal state visits in the 20th century of King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (King Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother further reinforcing their friendship. Today, the bronze elephant statue that King Chulalongkorn the Great graciously gifted to the people of Java still stands tall in front of the National Museum in Central Jakarta.
Both nations played a key role in fostering regional cooperation, becoming founding members of ASEAN in 1967. Their long-standing partnership continues to be defined by peace, solidarity, and mutual support.
Thailand and Lao PDR: 75 Years of Friendship and Education
Thailand and Lao PDR are commemorating 75 years of friendship and educational collaboration. A joint logo and sculptures were unveiled during Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone’s visit to Thailand in February 2025.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over merit-making ceremonies at the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane. Cross-border temple visits will also mark major Buddhist holidays, while Thai universities are set to offer scholarships for Lao students in key academic fields.
Thailand and Singapore: 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations
On this occasion, Thailand and Singapore signed five MOUs to enhance consumer protection, e-commerce, fintech, and agri-trade. The agreements were signed during the 7th STEER Ministerial Meeting, where both nations reaffirmed their strong economic ties.
Additionally, discussions advanced on intellectual property, carbon credits, and cruise tourism. In 2024, bilateral trade reached S$44.5 billion, with Singapore emerging as Thailand’s largest foreign investor. Both countries aim to deepen their economic partnership, leveraging complementary strengths for mutual growth in sectors such as electric vehicles (EVs), fintech, and MedTech.
Thailand and Singapore are also strengthening bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, water management, and urban development, with a focus on sustainable growth and smart city initiatives. Deputy Interior Minister Sabida Thaiset met with Singaporean officials to discuss collaborative projects, including academic exchanges and best practices in urban planning. People-to-people connectivity, particularly in tourism and education, remains a key priority, with over 1.1 million Singaporean tourists visiting Thailand in 2023.
Thailand and Singapore have also marked the diplomatic milestone with a commemorative logo unveiled in January 2025.
Thailand and China: 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Thailand and China are marking 50 years of diplomatic relations with nearly 50 major events, including the inauguration of two commemorative archways, presided over by Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida in Bangkok on January 25.
Alongside the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese ties, the archways honor His Majesty the King’s 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary in 2024. Located on Charoen Krung Road, the structures were inspired by the “Five Dragons” concept, symbolizing the King, the zodiac, and cultural heritage. Built through collaboration between public and private sectors, these “dragon gate arches” are set to become a new Bangkok landmark.
Also taking place are academic forums and exhibitions. Additionally, a major cultural gesture saw China sending the Lord Buddha’s tooth relic to Thailand in December 2024 for temporary enshrinement. The second Thailand-China Ministerial Meeting on Digital Economy, held from January 18-19, further strengthened ties. The milestone was also celebrated through grand Chinese New Year festivities in Yaowarat and Phuket.
This year also saw Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China in February, emphasizing long-standing ties while reaffirming commitments to infrastructure, digital economy, and trade, with Thailand advancing its high-speed railway project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Addressing safety concerns, the Thai premier reiterated assurances of enhanced security for Chinese travelers, a crucial demographic for Thailand’s tourism industry. The two nations also pledged stronger cooperation against transnational crimes, including online scams.
With 2025 shaping up to be a landmark year for Thai diplomacy, these celebrations and agreements underscore Thailand’s growing role in regional cooperation and cultural exchange.
