Thailand’s Year of Diplomatic Milestones: Europe

2025 is an auspicious year for Thailand’s diplomatic relations, as the kingdom marks major milestones with countries around the globe, including on the European continent.

The United Kingdom, France, Norway, Iceland, Ireland, and North Macedonia have historic anniversaries with Thailand this year, and these diplomatic celebrations are paving the way for deeper partnerships in trade, culture, and education.

Here’s a look at how Thailand is commemorating these landmark occasions.

1. 340 Years Since First Contact Between Thailand and France

Thailand and France are celebrating 340 years since making first contact in 1685, when King Narai the Great of the Ayutthaya Kingdom welcomed a French diplomatic mission led by Chevalier de Chaumont at the behest of King Louis XIV. Additionally, 2026 will mark the 170th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties.

Honoring the occasion, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French Embassy announced the winning commemorative logo, under the theme “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow,” featuring Bangkok’s Wat Arun and Paris’ Eiffel Tower under images of fireworks.

Also featured was an exhibition organized by the Thai Association of French Teachers that highlighted centuries of Thai-French cooperation, along with musical performances by Thai and French musicians.

In addition to the commemorative events, Alliance Française Bangkok will be celebrating its 113th anniversary in November, highlighting its long-standing role in promoting French language and culture in Thailand.

2. 170 Years of Relations Between Thailand and the United Kingdom

This year marks the 170th anniversary of Thai-UK diplomatic relations, tracing back to the signing of the Bowring Treaty of 1855 by senior representatives of Siam and Sir John Bowring. This treaty, the first trade agreement between what was then Siam and a Western power, marked a pivotal moment that brought the nation into the era of modern international trade, leading to rapid economic growth.

Celebrations kicked off on January 16th, 2025, with a reception at Bangkok’s Central Post Office, the site of the first British consulate in Bangkok. To commemorate the occasion, the Royal Thai Embassy in London and the British Embassy in Bangkok jointly organized a logo design competition, with the winning design, titled “The Unity of Elephant and Lion Relations,” unveiled to symbolize their enduring friendship.

The British Council Thailand has also been fostering educational and cultural relations since 1952, offering English courses and supporting various arts initiatives. The council last year organized the Study UK Alumni Awards 2025 to honor Thai alumni who have studied in the UK.

3. 120 Years of Thai-Norwegian Partnership

Thailand and Norway marked 120 years of diplomatic relations with a feast fit for the occasion in the form of Norwegian seafood. The annual Seafood Under the Stars dinner brought together over 350 guests, including high-ranking officials, to celebrate trade and tourism ties.

Another recent highlight was the signing of a free trade agreement between Thailand and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Norway is a member, which is expected to boost economic cooperation between the two nations.

These diplomatic anniversaries underscore Thailand’s long-standing global connections and continued efforts to strengthen its international partnerships. As 2025 unfolds, these celebrations will not only honor the past but also lay the foundation for a future of deeper collaboration with the kingdom’s European friends.

4. 50 Years of Thai-Icelandic Relations

Thailand and Iceland, which is also a member of the EFTA, are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic ties in 2025, highlighting a history of mutual respect and growing cooperation. Over the years, Iceland has been home to a vibrant Thai community, actively participating in cultural exchanges and diplomatic events.

The strong people-to-people ties were evident during the 2014 candle-lighting ceremony in Reykjavik City Hall, honoring the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, the reigning monarch at the time. Thai residents in Iceland came together to commemorate the revered monarch’s contributions to education, public health, and environmental protection.

Tourism remains a key pillar of Thai-Icelandic relations. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand was a popular travel destination for Icelanders, while Iceland’s unique landscapes drew adventurous Thai travelers. Both nations hope to see a resurgence in travel as restrictions ease.

5. 50 Years of Thai-Irish Diplomatic Ties

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Ireland, Thai and Irish designers — especially students and young artists — have been invited to submit designs for a commemorative logo.

Beyond formal diplomacy, the Irish community in Thailand remains active through organizations like the Thailand GAA Club and the Irish Thai Chamber of Commerce. Likewise, the growing Thai community in Ireland fosters cultural and economic exchanges, with increasing numbers of Thai students now studying in Ireland.

6. Two Decades of Thailand-North Macedonia Cooperation

In 2025, Thailand and North Macedonia commemorate 20 years of diplomatic relations, a partnership that has seen significant growth since its establishment. Over the past two decades, both nations have worked diligently to strengthen their bilateral relations.

In 2021, Thai Ambassador to North Macedonia Apirat Sugondhabirom met with officials from Invest North Macedonia to discuss avenues for strengthening economic ties, with discussions focusing on understanding North Macedonia’s business climate to facilitate Thai investments and promote exports.
