PM Paetongtarn champions Thailand as a top filming locale in Hollywood talks

On November 12th, 2024, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra reinforced Thailand’s commitment to the global film industry during a meeting with Charles H. Rivkin, CEO of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), and top executives from leading U.S. film companies including Netflix, Disney, and HBO, among others.

This meeting underscored Thailand’s policy of attracting international film productions through significant incentives, including a 30% cash rebate for filmmakers, which is uncapped, highlighting Thailand’s appeal as a lucrative filming destination.

In 2023, Thailand hosted over 450 international film projects from 40 countries, generating an estimated revenue of US$190 million. Notable recent productions include the third season of HBO’s “The White Lotus” and Netflix’s “Mother of the Bride” — both filmed at hotels in Koh Samui and Phuket. These projects not only showcase Thailand’s versatile locales but also its capacity to support large-scale international productions, injecting approximately US$1.3 million daily into the local economy and bolstering employment.

The government’s strategy leverages Thailand’s cultural richness and advanced film technology, aiming to make the nation a top choice for international studios. Furthermore, the collaboration between Thailand’s hospitality sector and film industry facilitates comprehensive support for film crews through services such as local talent sourcing and location scouting.

Thailand’s local film industry is also gaining international recognition. Films like “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” and “Paradise of Thorns” have not only been successful domestically but have also garnered international attention, demonstrating the capabilities of Thai filmmakers.

At the same time, Pattaya’s efforts to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a Creative City of Film highlights Thailand’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment for filmmaking. This recognition is anticipated to attract more filmmakers and tourists, boosting Pattaya’s and Thailand’s profile as a center for cultural and creative industries.

As Thailand enhances its infrastructure and builds stronger collaborations within the global film industry, it positions itself as a key player in the international arena, promising significant economic and cultural benefits from the burgeoning film production activities.
